Alyssa Chouinard- Board Certified Behavior Analyst
Alyssa earned her Bachelor’s degree in Counseling from Nova Southeastern University and her Master’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Connecticut. She earned her Board Certified Behavior Analyst Certification in February and spent the last year working at Connecticut Behavioral Health, LLC as a behavioral consultant for school districts across CT. While earning her Master’s degree, Alyssa spent four years working at the Institute of Professional Practice as an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) team lead, and as a lead ABA therapist, supervising a team of over ten ABA therapists. Alyssa currently resides in Watertown.
GRISWOLD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Alexandra Deni- Grade 4 Teacher
Alexandra earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Westfield State College and her Master’s degree in Education from Western New England University. She completed her student teaching at Blueberry Hill Elementary School in Longmeadow, MA. Alexandra comes to us from the Springfield Public Schools where she served as a grade four teacher for two years. Prior to this position, she served as the Title I interventionist at Indian Orchard Elementary School in Springfield where she provided differentiated instruction for math interventions and reading groups. Alexandra currently resides in Enfield.
Pauline Greer- Assistant Principal
Pauline attended the University of Connecticut where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and the University of Hartford where she earned her Master’s degree in Elementary Education. She also received her Sixth Year degree in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University. Pauline comes to us with over twenty years of classroom experience in various roles. Most recently, she served as the language arts curriculum specialist in Wethersfield, where she collaborated with more than thirty-seven classroom teachers district wide. She also spent eight years as an elementary teacher in multiple grades in Wethersfield, West Hartford and Windsor. Pauline’s desire to increase her leadership experiences led her to become involved in numerous school committees such as the Report Card Committee, SRBI Committee and the TEAM program. Pauline currently resides in Granby.
Sarah Larsen- Grade 2 Teacher
Sarah is no stranger to Griswold School, having served as the building substitute paraprofessional last year. Shortly after being hired as a para, Sarah was hired as a long-term substitute teacher in grade three, an assignment which continued through the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year. Her success in this position has now led to her first full-time teaching position. Sarah earned her Bachelor’s degree in History from Central Connecticut State University and completed her student teaching in Macdonough Elementary School in Middletown. She currently resides in Meriden.
Danielle Matrullo- Reading Teacher
Danielle spent six years working as a fourth grade teacher at Griswold School before resigning from her position in 2013 to focus on motherhood. Danielle earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from Providence College and her Master’s degree in Literacy Education from City University of New York. Prior to her time as a teacher in Berlin, Danielle spent four years working as a special education teacher in Bayside, NY and served as a literacy coach at Saints Cyril and Methodius School. Danielle re-joined Griswold School this past January as a literacy paraprofessional and seems ready and eager to dive back into teaching. She currently resides in Cromwell.
Caley Spahn- Grade 5 Teacher
Caley earned both her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and her Master’s degree in Collaborative Education from Rowan University in New Jersey. She studied Reading, American Studies, International Studies and Spanish. Caley even spent a semester abroad at Menendez Pelayo International University in Sevilla, Spain, where she participated in the International Reading Association Conference in Guatemala City leading Guatemalan teachers in practicing and performing comprehension strategies. Caley comes to us from New Jersey where she held a third grade teaching position in the Freehold Township School District for the past three years. She currently resides in Hamden.
Terri Lambert- Speech Pathologist
Terri joined the Berlin Public Schools last September and has had a very successful year working at Hubbard. She earned both her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology from Eastern Michigan University. Terri has spent the last nine years as the owner/speech pathologist for Building Blocks Educational Consulting, providing evaluation and treatment and goal development to families. She simultaneously worked for Building Bridges Birth-to-Three, LLC coordinating service, evaluations and treatment to families. She also spent three years working as a speech pathologist for the Rocky Hill Public Schools. She is a member of the American Speech Language Hearing Association and the Connecticut Speech Language Hearing Association. Terri currently resides in Cromwell.
WILLARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Allison Curran- Special Education Teacher
Allison spent the last year at Griswold School in a temporary special education teaching position for a teacher on leave. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from Providence College and holds certifications in both Special Education and Elementary Education. Allison completed two student teaching assignments in North Attleboro, MA in first and fourth grade classrooms. She also served as a long-term substitute at Falls Elementary School in Attleboro in the Intensive Learning Center. She is very involved in athletics, having served as assistant swim coach in Glastonbury and as a volunteer in the CT and RI Special Olympics. Allison currently resides in Wethersfield.
Cassandra Frascadore – Grade 3 Teacher
Cassandra began her employment with the Berlin Public Schools back in 2012 when she served as a long-term substitute secretary to the assistant superintendent before joining our substitute teacher list. Cassandra is a graduate of The University of Massachusetts, Amherst where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She also attended Central Connecticut State University where she earned her Elementary Education teaching certification. Most recently, Cassandra worked as a third grade teacher at Kingsbury Elementary School in Waterbury where she was awarded the Sensational Staff Award by the school principal. She currently resides in Southington.
Kaitlin Fritsch – Grade 4 Teacher
Kaitlin just finished up a long-term fifth grade teaching assignment at Griswold School where she discovered her passion for working in Berlin. Kaitlin is a graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in History and Social Sciences with a Minor in Elementary Education. Prior to working in Berlin, she completed a sixth grade substitute teaching assignment in Orange, CT and also worked as a full time elementary teacher in second and fifth grades at Stafford Elementary School. Kaitlin is a member of the International Reading Association and currently resides in Meriden.
Jessica Garrity- Physical Therapist
Jessica was contracted to serve as a Physical Therapist in 2011 for the Berlin summer school program. She also provided contracted services for the 2012 and 2013 school years and was recently hired full time for the position. Jessica earned her combined Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Russell Sage College in New York. Prior to her work in Berlin, Jessica provided home based physical therapy for children at the HARC Stepping Stones Birth to Three Program in Hartford. She also spent a year working at Norwalk Rehabilitation providing school based therapy to kids in the Stamford school district. Prior to this, she spent a few years in Boston working at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital as well as at Dimock Early Intervention. Jessica currently resides in Berlin.
Natalie Hammond- Assistant Principal
Natalie Graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Special Education from Gettysburg College before attending Western Connecticut State University where she earned her Master’s degree in Elementary Education with a focus in Reading. She also attended Sacred Heart University where she received her Administrative Leadership Certification. Natalie comes to us from Newtown, CT where she served as a third grade teacher for thirteen years before getting promoted to lead teacher in 2012. While serving in Newtown, Natalie was an active member of the District Assessment Team, Safe School Climate Committee and served as a Team Mentor. She currently resides in Southbury.
Kristin Hemphill, Grade 2 Teacher
Kristen is a graduate of the University of Saint Joseph where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and her Master’s degree in Education. She has spent the last three years teaching at Central Elementary School in Simsbury in third grade and kindergarten. Kristen was very involved with the full day kindergarten transition and implemented a new curriculum. Kristen also completed a two year internship at Central Elementary where she served as a literacy intern instructing tier 2 and tier 3 intervention reading groups. Her former principal has described Kristin as a “masterful collaborator in every sense of the word. Berlin is lucky to have her.” She currently resides in Berlin.
Cynthia Herren- Reading Teacher
Cynthia earned her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Keene State College in NH and her Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Southern Connecticut State University. She spent eleven years teaching in the Naugatuck school district as an elementary teacher in kindergarten, first and second grades, and then as a reading teacher. The most recent position she held in Naugatuck was as a reading consultant. Cynthia has spent the last four years as the Girl Scout leader to her daughter’s troop and currently resides in Prospect.
Kara Wolman, School Psychologist
Kara is a National Board Certified School Psychologist. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of New York at Albany and her Master’s and Sixth Year degrees in Educational Psychology from the University of Connecticut. She was formerly serving as a school psychologist at Jerome Harrison Elementary in North Branford where she worked with children in pre-school to second grade conducting and administering cognitive, behavioral, educational, and functional behavioral assessments. Prior to her work as a school psychologist, Kara worked as a behavioral interventionist paraprofessional in Burlington, CT and a birth to three paraprofessional at McLaughlin & Associates, LLC in Mansfield Center, CT. Kara currently resides in Simsbury.
MCGEE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Robin Ferguson- Math Teacher
Robin earned her Bachelor’s degree in Math from Central Connecticut State University. She completed her student teaching here in Berlin at McGee School where she assisted with math lessons for grade seven and eight students. She also served as a long-term substitute math teacher at McGee this past school year. Prior to her work in Berlin, Andrea served as an academic learning tutor at the Martin Kellogg Middle School in Newington where she was responsible for math and language arts instruction. Robin currently resides in Southington.
Andrea Gallo- Science Teacher
As a Berlin High School graduate, Andrea is very familiar with the Berlin School system. Andrea earned her Bachelor’s degree in Science from Springfield College and her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport. She completed her student teaching at Maloney High School in Meriden and comes to us from the Simsbury Public Schools where she served as a grade eight science teacher. Prior to her work as a teacher, Andrea served as a paraprofessional in Bristol and even worked as a substitute teacher and coach here in Berlin where she currently resides.
David Kitzman – Assistant Principal
David graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Oregon before attending City University of Seattle where he earned his Master’s degree in Education. He also received his Administrative Leadership certification from the University of Connecticut. David grew up in the Seattle, Washington area and taught on the West coast as a language arts and social studies teacher while also serving as English department chair. It was during this time that David earned his National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification. David moved to CT in 2011 where he accepted a position in Granby as an eighth grade English teacher. He currently resides in West Hartford.
Kristine Peterson, Integrated Language Arts Teacher
Kristine joins McGee after serving eight years at the Weston Middle School as a language arts teacher serving grades six and eight. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and Psychology from Fairfield University and holds a Master’s degree in Teaching from Sacred Heart University. Kristine is currently working towards her Sixth Year degree in Literacy at Sacred Heart University. While teaching in Weston, Kristine designed and implemented language arts curriculum, served as a team leader and was founder and advisor to the school newspaper. Kristine currently resides in Bridgeport.
Thomas Sheridan- Integrated Language Arts Teacher
Thomas attended King’s College in Wilkes Barre, PA where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. He is a recent graduate of the University of Connecticut where he earned his Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Thomas completed his student teaching at Rockville High School in Vernon, assisting with English instruction in grades eleven and twelve. While earning his Master’s degree, Thomas spent eight months abroad in Tbilisi, Georgia where he taught English to students in kindergarten to grade six. Thomas also served in the United States Army as a Special Forces Cadet and was quickly promoted to Platoon Sergeant where he was in charge of sixty soldiers. Thomas currently resides in Vernon.
BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL
Zoe Allard- Special Education Teacher
Berlin High School is very excited to be home to Zoe’s first teaching position as she steps into her role as a special education teacher. A 2014 graduate of the University of St. Joseph, Zoe earned her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education with a Minor in Dance. Zoe completed two student teaching assignments at the Annie Fisher Magnet School and the R.J. Kinsella Performing Arts Magnet School where she worked with students in grades one, four to five and six to eight. Zoe is an avid dancer and has taught in several studios around the state. She was given the opportunity to combine her love of dance with her passion to teach while serving as the activities, movement and dance coordinator at a special needs camp in Windham. Zoe currently resides in Willimantic.
Jeremiah Berard-Guidance Counselor
Jeremiah earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics and Psychology from Eastern Connecticut State University and his Master’s degree in School Counseling from Central Connecticut State University. He completed two student teaching assignments at Manchester High School and East Hartford Middle School. Jeremiah has worked as a counselor in the Canton and Stafford school districts and has also served in the United States Air Force as an Airborne Linguist where he provided mission supervisors with updated information and prepared mission briefings. Jeremiah currently resides in Manchester.
Ashley Cassello- Special Education Teacher
Ashley will step into her first teaching assignment as a special education teacher at Berlin High School this year. Ashley attended Hartwick College where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and is a 2014 graduate of the University of Saint Joseph where she earned her Master’s degree in Special Education. Ashley gained valuable experience through two student teaching assignments this past school year at the Annie Fisher Magnet School and the Martin Luther King Elementary School in Hartford where she worked with students in grades two to five. Ashley has a true passion to work with children and has served in multiple capacities over the years including her work as a paraprofessional, tutor and volunteer for special needs students. Ashley currently resides in Bolton.
Jeffrey Cronk- Social Studies Teacher/Department Head
Jeffrey attended Northeastern University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and is a two-time graduate of Quinnipiac University where he earned his Master’s degree in Education and his Sixth Year degree in Educational Leadership. Jeffrey comes to us from North Branford High School where he served as a social studies teacher for six years. He was actively involved with his school having participated in numerous committees throughout the district including the National Honors Society and the Faculty Forum. He also coordinated the annual Veteran’s Day Event and was even nominated as teacher of the year. Jeffrey currently resides in Durham.
Tim Grady- Assistant Principal
Having served in his role as assistant principal at BHS for nearly a year now, Tim has become a friendly face throughout the Berlin High School community. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with his Bachelor’s degree in English and the University of New Haven with his Master’s degree in Education. He also attended Sacred Heart University where he received his Sixth Year degree in Educational Leadership. Prior to serving in Berlin, Tim spent two years as the instructional specialist for the Hartford Public Schools where he provided instructional leadership and created staff development opportunities. He also served as a creative writing teacher at the Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School in New Haven for over eight years. Additionally, Tim helped establish and coordinate the Shubert Theater Arts Camp in New Haven and acted as program coordinator. Tim currently resides in Cheshire.
Lauren Masterson- English Teacher
Lauren recently graduated from Central Connecticut State University where she obtained both her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in English. She completed two student teaching assignments at Berlin High School where she worked with ten and eleventh grade students. Prior to her student teaching, Lauren worked as a substitute teacher in the East Haddam school district for secondary classrooms. She has also worked as an academic tutor where she tutored and mentored minority students and also fulfilled the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification requirements. Lauren currently resides in Colchester.
Shayne Munoz- Spanish Teacher
Shayne earned his Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and his Master’s degree in Education from the University of Connecticut. During his undergraduate program, Shayne spent a semester abroad in Granada, Spain where he was immersed in the Spanish culture and gained valuable knowledge and insight on the Spanish language. He completed his student teaching at Newington High School and just completed a temporary teaching assignment in Newington where he was responsible for delivering Spanish instruction to over one hundred and twenty students in five different classes. Shayne is very involved in athletics and serves as a coach for numerous sports including basketball, soccer and lacrosse. Shayne currently resides in Newington.
Ana Nascimento- Guidance Counselor
Ana earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Connecticut and her Master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of Saint Joseph. She completed a high school student teaching assignment in Newington and a middle school assignment in Farmington. She also completed a school counseling internship at Newington High School. Ana comes to us from Windham High School in Willimantic where she was responsible for providing counseling services to over two hundred students in grades nine to twelve. She is a member of the American School Counseling Association and the Connecticut School Counseling Association. Ana currently resides in Simsbury.
Jennifer Niro, Technology Integration Specialist
Jennifer comes to Berlin after ten years of teaching math and computer science at Plainville High School. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Math and Computer Science from the University of Saint Joseph and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Bridgeport. Prior to her years of teaching, Jennifer was a master instructor at the New Horizons Computer Learning Center where she delivered high-end instruction and training in software and technical learning. She also served as a consultant on data collection and developed and updated databases for various clients. Jennifer currently resides in Southington.
Radmila Paneva- Social Worker
Radmila joined Berlin High School this past spring and has worked as a school clinician for over three years. Radmila earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Trinity College and her Master’s degree in Social Work from Southern Connecticut State University. Prior to working in Berlin, Radmila has worked as a social worker at Mount Saint John in Deep River, Eastconn in Columbia, and High Road School in Hartford, CT. She holds six different certifications related to her field and speaks five different languages including Bulgarian and French. Radmila currently resides in Rocky Hill.
Chelsea Schumann- English Teacher
Chelsea recently moved to Connecticut from Lomira, WI where she taught English at New Berlin West High School in New Berlin, WI. Chelsea attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and English. She completed two student teaching assignments in WI where she taught sixth grade language arts and ninth and eleventh grade English while winning the Outstanding Student Teacher Award presented by the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English. Chelsea also spent a summer abroad studying in London, England. she currently resides in Hamden.
Brianna Timbro- Social Studies Teacher
Brianna graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a concentration in History. She completed her student teaching at Cromwell High School in 2012 and has spent the last few years working with children in many different capacities. Most recently, Brianna was a special education paraprofessional at Colchester High School serving all grades and subjects with a focus in vocational preparation. Prior to this, Brianna served as a long-term substitute special education teacher at Garfield Middle School, NJ serving grades six and eight in reading and writing. Brianna also worked as an instructional leader for the Garfield Boys and Girls Club in New Jersey where she provided classroom support to students completing homework and other activities. In addition, she served as the Performing Arts Club director and coordinated multiple club talent shows. Brianna currently resides in Glastonbury.
Renovations at Berlin High School continue on schedule with approximately one third of the building being completed and turned over for use by the students and staff when they return for the 2014-2015 school year. Another third of the school has been abated this summer and a large percentage of demolition work is complete in support of the this next renovation stage. The next key turn over date includes the main gym for the winter sports season with a scheduled completion the week before Thanksgiving. It is also anticipated that the new science wing may be ready for turnover by the spring break in April and the newly renovated 3 story media center wing and the new front entry will complete this second renovation stage next summer. The final third of the building will be taken next summer for abatement and demolition and is scheduled to be completed the summer and fall of 2016.
