On Thursday, October 12th , three of our Berlin Volunteer Firefighters visited Willard Elementary School to teach the children about fire prevention and safety. They showed the children the gear they wear to protect themselves while fighting fires, how to stop, drop and roll, and how the people inside the gear are there to help in an emergency. They asked the children about fire safety at home and gave them homework that includes:
- Checking to see if your home has smoke detectors
- Reminding families to change the batteries in smoke detectors every time we change the clocks
- Practicing a Fire Escape Plan at home
- Practicing Stop, Drop and Roll
- Reminding adults that the number to call in an emergency is 9-1- 1
After the talk, students were shown a fire ladder truck and some of the tools the firefighters use in their work. The program concluded with students touring the fire truck and asking questions about safety. Thank you again to the Berlin Fire Department for supporting the students at Willard Elementary School!
